Pitfalls of Bad Web Design That Still Get Used

Bad web design and how it impacts your website

Bad Web Design – What you need to avoid

For whatever reason, no matter what is written or talked about in relationship to web design, bad things get published. There’s a lot of bad web design out there. Look online at any niche and you’re going to see a lot of it hit you right in the face. Some of it is egregious, and some of it is related to the adult industry. Whatever the case is, you’re going to find a lot of issues with the modern world of web design, especially the bad kind. The following are just some of the head scratchers that some people try to pass on as web design, but it’s not. Avoid these things, it’s going to help you keep your site from failing miserably.

No Navigation In Web Design

Unless you have a 1 page site, you shouldn’t have hidden navigation or anything that is too complex. Web design is important in that it helps guide the user to their destination. If you don’t have any navigation, or any structure, you’re going to lose your audience fast. People that manage to land on your site will bounce right out. Your bounce rate will be so high, that you will be left without any audience to speak of. This is not a good plan of action.

Bad Writing

If you’re not a good writer, or if you’re just putting in “dummy text”, you’ll want to think twice. People that don’t have good writing on their site, don’t usually build large audiences. You are going to find yourself in disarray because of this. There’s a lot of bad writing out there, and it’s interesting to see how many people try to force the issue. You will want to jump past the bad writing, and hire someone to create mark up. If you have a blog, let that become your proving ground, otherwise, stay away from bad writing when it comes to web design elements.

Bad Color Schemes

There was a time when rainbow backgrounds rules the landscape of new web design techniques. That’s long and gone. Do not put anything insane in regards to colors into your website. Web design that has a bad color scheme will cause the end user to have a headache, and you will end up losing a lot of attention. Traffic sent to a site that has terrible colors has a high bounce rate. Web design and colors go hand in hand, so avoid elements that are clearly not going together.

Paletton is a great website that can help you pick a color scheme for your web site design

Flash Heavy

Flash is dead. Ok, maybe it’s not completely dead, but it’s not exactly a thrilling concept. This animation heavy option was once the pride of the web design world. It’s no longer such. If you go into this world of flash and elements that are tied to it, you better not have your site become all animation. Don’t use flash in heavy doses, just don’t do it. Some people may say that it’s good, but don’t believe them. There’s nothing good in web design that seems to use this like it’s 1999.

No vital Information

One of the worst things that you can do when it comes to web design is omitting the vital information that you need to give the end user. Your readers and visitors are going to your site for a reason. Don’t mire that reason with something that doesn’t make any sense. It’s imperative that you do not omit vital information about yourself, or your business. If someone can’t contact you, call you, or get a hold of you other than an email that they had to hunt down, that’s a bad thing. It’s bad web design.

Auto Playing Sounds and Video

Never do this. Web design should never have auto playing music or video. This is a negative thing and it will never really come up well. Auto playing sounds is a thing of the past, and auto playing video is stupid. Don’t do this if you want to have a good, respected website. There are some sites that try to get away with this, but they are never seen from again. Ok, maybe they are, but it’s a bad idea and in a world full of mobile technologies, it sucks up bandwidth. A person shouldn’t have to install a blocking plugin to visit your site. Don’t do this, and keep your web design neat, clean, and easy to work with. You’re going to find that it’s way better that way.
