Is my site down for everyone or just me?

Sometimes you just want to know if a website is down for everyone or if it’s just you.  I’ve found that hosting companies will block your IP address on their firewall if you have too many failed login attempts to email or FTP.  If you use Microsoft Outlook or Mac mail for example and you have it set to check email too often (5-10min is standard) then their server might block your IP.  The hosting servers firewall thinks you are trying to brute-force and will block your IP for a certain period of time.  When this happens you won’t be able to access your website or emails however that does not mean your website is down.  It just means that the computer you are on and any other computer in your home or office that is using that IP address will be unable to access the hosting server.

If you think your site is down but are unsure use this free tool to check if your website is up or down.

How to unblock your IP address

Your IP address is your computers unique numerical address.  Each computer that connects to the Internet has a unique address to distinguish itself.  If you think your IP address is blocked then contact your web hosting company and ask them to unblock your IP address.  Generally though the block should lift on it’s own within a short period of time (15min to 60min).  Contacting your host will be the fastest way to unblock your IP address if you think it’s blocked.

What is my IP address?
